Terra was the leader of the genasi group, and he was a powerful magician that had always been attuned to the earth. The experience of being enslaved by the wizard king greatly diminished his magical power, but it was still great enough for him to be able to manipulate the earth to free himself and a few others and escape. Unfortunately, his skill in earth magic seemed to have receded to basic levels, but there was one other kind of magic that Terra was able to use...
(The genasi are highly skilled in elemental magic and automatically get the basic form of magic for the element they're attuned to. In this case, earth magic. So you and your people can, at this point, just move the earth around. Useful to till fields without labor or construct walls in a pinch.)
