"Tomorrow. About the same time sounds good...I'll bring you some food."
"You don't have to."
"I insist, though. We'll talk some more at that time."
"..."
"I'll see you later, then."
"Wait...those wounds. Did you get them on a mission?"
You look over at the bandages that were still on your person from that other night. "No. I was protecting someone important."
"That's it?"
"Yes, that's it."
"What would make you want to do something like that?"
"Well...it was out of love."
"..."
"If you want to know more, we'll talk about that tomorrow as well."
---
You head over to the Hokage's office again, reporting on what had happened with Sasuke. The old man nods his head sagely as you speak.
"I see. It won't be easy getting through to him, it seems."
"But it's possible," you assure him.
"If you believe it is so, then it is so."
"Like that, huh? Then...I'll speak to him again tomorrow, as I said I would. Thank you for listening, Lord Hokage."
"Anytime, anytime. Take care, Yuki."
"I will."
As promised, you head out the next day and meet with Sasuke at his home. Frosty as usual...but his attitude was a bit different after your talk yesterday. He asked you a lot about yourself, and you explained a few things, like missions and how school went, things of that nature. You were forced to answer honestly when he asked about your childhood.
"I don't remember too much of it. It was mostly lonely, and I lived in a dreary place by myself until I was about five, I think. At that point, my first memories are waking up in what seemed to be a field, but it was actually someone's flower garden, Izumi's as I later found out. And that's when I first met Mami."
"You had no parents?"
"No, not that I could remember. Izumi took care of me, and Mami always came to visit whenever she could. That was for about five years or so, before the Kyuubi attacked the village. After that, I saw a lot less of Izumi until she went away...Mami tried to come by whenever she could, but her job on the police force didn't help matters. However, we were still very close. And after that..."
"The massacre of my clan."
"Yes...Sasuke. Can I ask you something?"
"If you must..."
"What else do you think about?"
He looks at you oddly. "What do you mean by that...?"
"Do you think about your future outside of avenging your clan?"
"There's nothing else to think about. The purpose of my existence is to be an avenger, to restore my clan."
"You honestly believe that's all there is?"
"What, you think that there's something else? Like being the Hokage's lapdog? Like going out to die in some barren wasteland somewhere, for something of little consequence to you? That's a joke."
"You don't need to put words in my mouth," you say with a frown.
"All you would do is sugarcoat them. Dress them up in ridiculous terms. My purpose suits me just fine."
"And what of your teammates? What of the people you have to work with, go on missions with?" you ask calmly.
"Merely means to an end. As long as they don't slow me down, I'll work with them. I'll even respect them if they earn it."
How cold...something must have happened on that day seven years ago to make him like this.
"What about you? Do you believe that 'love' is enough to justify your existence?"
"No...not even I am that naive."
He raises an eyebrow at your response.
"You see...my reason for existence is to protect the dreams of the people I love. To give them hope, and to be courageous in the face of any danger or conflict. 'Hope' is the reason for my existence, mainly. That's the reason behind my name. That is not to say that my heart is pure...my thoughts at times may be even darker than yours, Sasuke."
"..."
"Anyways...think about that future of yours, and how far you'll go to reach it. Of course, I hope you understand..."
You smile sweetly as you look towards him.
"If you ever do anything to hurt the people I love, I might have to kill you, okay?"
Despite his supposed toughness, he jumps a bit at hearing that. Good...he wasn't as dense as you first thought.
"Anyways, I'll see you later, Sasuke. I've got some things to take care of at the Academy. Take care, alright? And don't waste that food I brought you."
"Right...I won't." His voice was a bit subdued now. Hopefully, you didn't scare him all that much...
---
This morning was a bit odd...the feeling that you were getting. Talking about your childhood with Sasuke had really gotten you to thinking about what really had happened back then. Your name, your lineage...a lot of that was still unknown to you. You hadn't really thought too much about it over the years, but now it was becoming a bit curious. And why exactly couldn't they identify her body? Why was Izumi gone all of a sudden? Some things didn't add up, not exactly.
You rise out of bed slowly and get dressed in your usual outfit, this time with a green top and white cargo shorts. The bandages could come off completely, now. You mess around a bit with Red Queen, trying to work out tweaks as usual before you eat breakfast and head out for the morning. The sun hadn't come up yet, and wouldn't do so for at least a few hours.
You head over to the Hokage's Mansion anyways, just to check in. As you do so, you find the old man out front, smoking his pipe.
"Ah, Yuki. Good to see you so early."
"I had trouble sleeping, Lord Hokage."
"Oh? Why was that?"
"I've been wondering about my past. After speaking with Sasuke, it started to come to my attention that I don't really know where I've come from. I know that it might sound rude to ask, but-"
"I understand your sentiments, child. It has caught my interest, as well."
"Oh?"
He nods in response. "You do not have an official shinobi registration number, but you were sponsored by several anonymous benefactors up until you were about five years old, and that was when young Izumi took you into her home. She faced a lot of opposition for that decision, among other things..."
"You mean like her friendship with Mami."
"Yes, like that."
"Do you know why she was sent away?"
"I do not, and have come up with no information as to why she was sent on this supposed 'mission' of hers."
"..."
"I have been searching for all of this information for years myself, and have come to no clear roads on it so far. It seems that someone wants all of that kept secret."
"That's...kind of troubling to hear."
"Indeed. But you should not worry about it too much for now. Whatever happens, I will be by your side, Yuki."
It warmed your spirits to hear that from him. "Thank you very much, Lord Hokage."
"Of course, of course. Now, about those boys..."
"Yes?"
"You've noted that they both live alone at the present time."
"I have. You're suggesting that we arrange something for them?"
"Something to that effect. There are a few options we have at our disposal. The first is to have you live with one or the other, as odd as it may seem at first."
"That seems to make sense."
"The second is the opposite, to have one of them move into your home, so you could keep watch over them. The third is a variation where you would take in both of them, the fourth is something different."
"Different, sir?"
"It involves you living with the boys and at least one other person in a specially built home, created with some, well...experimental things installed. From the West."
"Ah...new technology."
"Precisely. The catch is that for a yet to be disclosed period of time, you would perform various tasks on behalf of the jounin council, myself, the Fire Daimyo, and a few of the clan heads. You would have the power to refuse certain missions, but you would always have to choose one at the appointed time in its place. I've screened the processes, so you wouldn't have to worry about any unpleasant tasks. The home would be presented to you free of charge, and you would recieve a handsome bonus as part of your paycheque, as well as a supply of food each week."
"Sounds tempting."
"Indeed it does. Of course, the choice is up to you as always. Inform me of your decision at some point in time, Yuki."
"I definitely will. Thank you, Lord Hokage."
"You're very welcome. Take care, child."
---
Well...you had that decision to chew on. What would you do in the meantime?
---
Concerning the living situation
a) "I think I'll just move in with one of those kids."
b) "Hm. One of them is better off staying at my place."
c) "Might as well take them both in, it's no problem."
d) "That new house sounds awesome! Totally living there!" (remember that you'd have an extra roomie)
e) "I've got another idea instead..."

f) Go and visit/spend some time with a person/people (options)
g) Go and see what Naruto was doing

"Okay, it's decided. I'll take care of both those boys at my house! Although, free food sounds like a good deal..." Your mouth begins to water a bit at that prospect. However, duty came first.
"Ah, well. Maybe another time. For now, though...training sounds good."
---
It was a long time ago that Izumi had suggested you wear cargo shorts more often. Firstly, because they were functional and stylish at the same time. Secondly, because your belt was getting ridiculously crowded with all of the extra stuff you liked to carry and tinker with. It had become a habit since then, you buying them in lots of different colours and slightly varying styles for other occasions.
Those pockets came in handy a lot of the time since then, like now. For training, you wanted to see if you could finally get 'that' to work with your sword techniques.
Okay...here we go.
"Time to shine, Red Queen..."
The engine roared to life as you cranked the blade's handle, the chakra within rushing about, until...
"Sweet~ I got it, finally."
Flowing along the edge of the blade was a rushing torrent of water, not strong enough to cut, but definitely useful in extending the range of some techniques that you used.
"Right, then. Exceed S is online!" You nod to yourself, proud of your work today. Anything else? Might be, before you headed off to the Academy for the day.
---
Available Jutsu! (non-elemental)
Kikoho - by forming the hands in a triangle shape, one can create a powerful burst of energy outwards towards the target.
Kienzan - razor-sharp disc of chakra, able to cut through...almost anything? Well, at least a lot of things for now.
---
a) Ninjutsu training 1. Elemental 2. Non-elemental
b) Taijutsu training 1. Kenjutsu specific 2. Hand to hand specific
c) Genjutsu training

You took a couple hours to brush up on your swordsmanship, learning two new combinations in the meantime. The first involved adding several quick and wide-angle slashes to a combination after two normal swings, allowing you to cover a wider area for your attack at times. The second was a variation on your first combination, except with some extra power forced into the last of four stronger swings. As you continually noted, Red Queen wasn't exactly the most subtle weapon, but she did the job quite well whenever you asked.
With that done, you headed over to the Academy to do some work with the children there. School didn't have to be a boring experience, right? It was for you, but...well, you were terrible, so you had all of those extra classes. How boring. At least this generation was lively.
"Thanks for all of your help, Yuki."
"It's no problem, Iruka. Do you need me to come by anytime soon?"
"How about tomorrow afternoon?"
"Sounds like a plan." You feel a slight tugging at your shirt from behind. "Eh? What's up?"
"Come play with us, onee-san!" A young girl with brown hair was calling to you. "You can teach us more things, right?"
"Teach? I thought you all wanted to play around, like normal children."
"Nu-uh. We want to see more of your magic!"
"Ah..." You had shown them some of your control over fire and water earlier...magic, huh? Well, these kids were still very young, but to hear it like that...well, it was kind of like magic, wasn't it?
"Okay. I'll be outside in a moment."
"Yeah! We'll be waiting, alright?" She scampers off with her friends.
"Those kids...I wish we could explain to them what we're getting them into. They'll all grow up, and then they'll have to risk their lives for a living. It's hard to think about," Iruka says.
"I can understand. But at least...they have this time to themselves. A time of learning, of fun, and..." You twirl water around your hand with a smile. "Of magic..."
Iruka smiles back at you. "We need more people like you around, Yuki."
"Eh...a world of Yuki would be a bit cold, you know?" you say as you run outside.
"Seriously? Can't you tell better jokes?"
"I'll work on it!"
---
After a few hours of fun with the younger children, you have some lunch before catching up on some paperwork you wanted to get done. Mostly financial things...those were taken care of quickly. Next was a bit of hunting for some spare parts for the gadgets you would make occasionally...they weren't anything amazing, but they served their purposes quite well. That reminded you that you needed to talk to Shikaku Nara about the new electric razor he wanted fixed.
Aside from that, the day wasn't incredibly eventful. You did go running with Gai for about an hour before bidding him farewell and moving over to one of the vacant training areas. Naruto and Sasuke were there, along with their jounin-sensei and a pink-haired girl who seemed to be fawning over Sasuke. Quite overtly, too.
You get a relaxed greeting as usual from the man with wild white hair and his headband tilted over his left eye.
"Yo."
"Yo," you wave back. "I see you have quite the team assembled, Kakashi."
"Yes...quite a team," he says, not hiding his exasperation with the three already.
"Mind if I talk to the boys for a bit? Actually, you probably should hear this as well."
"You mean Naruto and Sasuke? I wonder what you've got to do with them..."
"You'll see soon enough." You wave over to the two boys who wave back, realize the other was doing the same thing, and then glare daggers at each other.
"That's enough, now. I assume you two are already acquainted?"
"Yeah. Way too acquainted," Sasuke mutters.
"Sorry to hear that, Sasuke. Naruto, how are things?"
"Pretty good. How come you're here, Yuki?"
"I've got something to tell you both. Naruto, I'm going to be Sasuke's guardian for the next little while."
"Oh...well, good luck then. You'll need it dealing with him!"
"Come a bit closer and say that, loser."
"What was that?"
You ignore them and continue. "Sasuke, I'm going to be Naruto's guardian for the next little while."
"Uh...wait, what?" Sasuke says.
"And I've come a decision based on all of that. Since I'm going to be taking care of you both, it makes sense that you'd both stay with me, at my place."
"Eh?" They both say in unison. "With you? With him?"
"Yup, yup!" you say with a smile. "You can fight all you want there. Morning, afternoons, evenings, doesn't matter! But remember this."
You beckon them closer. "You touch any of my projects, and I'll kill you! Then I'll make you into feed for the flowers I have out front." You wink at that. "Gotta recycle!"
"..."
"I think we're all clear. See you both soon, boys."
"Yes ma'am," they both say shakily.
"Any questions, Kakashi?"
"None at all. My door's always open if you have anything to suggest, though."
"Okay. Thanks a lot, Kakashi." You wave to the girl with pink hair. "I haven't gotten your name yet."
"It's Sakura Haruno."
"Ah, okay. I've heard about you a little. Nice to meet you, I'm Yuki Shirohana."
"Um...is Sasuke really going to be living with you? Isn't that a little...you know..."
Kakashi sighs, already knowing where this was headed. "Sakura..."
"No, it's a fair question," you interrupt. "Don't worry, I wouldn't do anything indecent with Sasuke or anyone his age, if you're wondering. I've got no interest in boys his age at all."
"Oh..."
"Of course...you never know what a few years can do, ne?" Her face goes from relaxed to ghostly pale at that. "Well, gotta go. It was nice meeting you, Sakura. Later, Kakashi."
"Yeah. Thanks, Yuki."
"No problem." Well, now that all of that was done with...oh, that was Asuma Sarutobi coming towards you.
"Hoped I'd find you here. The old man's got a few missions for you."
"Ah. Alright, then."
"And what you need to know is...there's a chance that one of them relates to Izumi's sending-off..."
You nod slowly. "Okay. Lead the way, Asuma."
---
"It's all very simple, here. You've got three choices to go on. First is a scouting mission in Grass Country. Basically border patrol and figuring out Iwagakure's head-games going on there. Simple one," Shikaku says. You were in a meeting room with several other chuunin and jounin, being briefed on the missions ahead.
"Second one's a bit trickier. There's been talk of disturbances in some towns and small villages near the old Rice Country borders. Some say it's Sound. Others are talking Waterfall. We've been asked to sort out the mess regardless of who it is. Try to go easy unless the situation calls for it, okay?" He shoots a look at Asuma, who shrugs as everyone gets a good laugh at that.
"Third one's of some interest to certain people. We've got a lead that Kumogakure shinobi are in the Hot Water Country, possibly trying to set up some trouble on our end using that place as a base. We also have reason to believe that they have one of our own under their watch. You'll only get more details if you choose to get on top of this one. So..." He tosses you a folder with several files. "I believe you have first pick, Miss Shirohana. You kicked a lot of ass on that last mission of yours. Take an assignment, take a team. The rest's up to fate, as they say..."
---
a) Scouting mission in Grass Country.
b) Dispute settlement on the northern border of Fire Country.
c) Interception of Cloud Village shinobi in Hot Water Country.

"Alright." You already had two people in mind for the mission already. They'd certainly take an interest in something like this. "I'll head out right away."
"Well, don't be too hasty. You're leaving tomorrow, anyways..."
"Okay. I'll tell those people that I want to come along first, then."
"Alright...as long as you don't talk about this with people not involved."
"Right. I'll see you in a while then, Shikaku."
"Yeah..."
---
"Ah, a mission. I heard a bit about it through the grapevine, you know? Hmm...you want me to come?"
This woman you were talking to now was Aoi Senju, a teacher at the Academy and someone you had known for a long while. When Izumi had to go on missions, Aoi would be the one who would take care of you.
People regarded her as an airhead most of the time, which...wasn't exactly false, but anyone who knew her well knew that there was a lot more to her than that. Her long blue hair was usually tied up into a bun on the back of her head, to keep it out of the way (yes, she would have trouble if it got in her way at all), and her green eyes were close to yours, though if you had to say, hers were a lot brighter. She also seemed incapable of holding any harsh feelings towards anyone. Probably one of the reasons they asked her to become a teacher, though some of the older students would take advantage of her...
"Yes, Aoi. It might be Izumi they have there."
"Onee-sama? If it's that important, I'll definitely come! Who shall I speak to?"
"Shikaku Nara. He should be in his office right about now. We'll leave tomorrow at dawn, Aoi...but I'll come to your house just to be safe."
"Oh, thank you? Um...is anyone else coming?"
"I'm thinking of Musei."
"Un, Musei is a good choice," she says while nodding her head. "Besides, we haven't seen each other in a long time, you know? It'll be a lot of fun!"
"Aoi...it's kind of a dangerous mission..."
"I'll bring some sheet music for Musei, and his favorite food, too!"
"Aoi..."
"And maybe some fresh strawberries. A blanket as well, since he hates the cold..."
"...I'll see you at dawn, Aoi."
"Oh, oh. And then I'll..."
---
The sound of music in the woods leads you to the next person that you wanted to see. He stops playing his guzheng (a Chinese zither) and bows politely towards you. You return his greeting in earnest.
"You always sound so nice, Musei."
He gestures a 'thank you' before asking what was up.
"Well, I have a mission I need to go on tomorrow. It might concern Izumi."
'Ah, nee-sama', he gestures.
"Yes. Would you come with me at dawn tomorrow?"
'I wouldn't mind. Who else is joining us?' he asks silently.
"Aoi, aside from myself."
'Aoi-nee can be clumsy,' he starts, 'but she is very reliable when needed'.
"That's very true."
'I will see you at dawn, then. Goodbye for now, Yuki.'
"Yes, bye for now," you say with a smile.
---
After speaking with the Hokage, you went off to prepare your equipment before turning in early for the night. You were up well before dawn on this day, and took what you needed for the long journey over to the Hot Water Country. Musei is predictably nearby, suspending his guzheng in the air with chakra while he plays on it. His long, light brown hair is tied up into a long and thin tail at the back of his head. He nods to you as you greet him, and you both head over to Aoi's place. Thinking about it, how a woman of her...personality lived alone was a mystery.
"Kya~!"
"Aoi!" You and Musei burst into her house (door was always unlocked) and find her lying on the floor, several kunai stuck close to her limbs and a shuriken firmly in the wood just above her head.
"Ehe...I'm alright! Just a little accident, that was all..."
"Oi...get up, you," you mutter.
"Oh, would you like some-"
"Pack it up and take it with you. We'll eat it at the first rest stop. And before you ask, I ate before I left home."
"Alright. At least you're taking care of yourself, that's good! Izumi would be proud, you know?"
You feel your heart sink a little. "...I'm wondering if she's really there, or if it's possible...that she's..."
"Mm...even so," Aoi says in her usual tone, "it wouldn't be for a useless reason. We'll find her some day soon, and no matter what the outcome, we'll celebrate her homecoming."
"Celebrate...that sounds just like you. Anyways, let's head out."
"Right!"
"Just take your time, though...for everyone's sake, Aoi..."
---
After a day of uneventful travel, you all settle down for the night, one person making sure to keep watch for any danger that might come your way. Musei volunteers the first watch, soothing both you and Aoi to sleep with sounds from his zither. He played certain tunes for different situations, which was quite helpful. Right now, there wasn't anything going on...
Your restful sleep ends with an upbeat tune flowing into your ears. 'Time to wake up, Yuki' was what it meant. You roll over and get ready to switch shifts when you note something odd...no, not just odd. There were definitely other people here. Musei notes it as well, his green eyes flickering about for movements as he plays a subtle melody for Aoi. She shoots up with a kunai in hand.
"Ah! What, what? Danger!" she says in a daze.
"Yeah...something's coming..."
You summon Red Queen, her engine rumbling quietly as you wait for whatever was coming to give you its intentions...you were still inside the Fire Country borders, no less. Just what could it be at this point in time?
---
a) Hold positions, react to what's coming.
b) Stay on the defensive for now.
c) Don't get comfortable, be aggressive.

"Hm. Might as well get moving. Musei, I'll give you a signal when it's about time. Aoi, pack up any loose things that we need to take with us. I'll handle the heavy fighting. When we've started on our way, I'll need you to cover us both, Musei."
He nods in response and waits for your signal, as Aoi gets to cleaning up the campsite. In about a minute, she's already packed and nods to you. You signal to Musei, and he starts to play his zither quickly, stirring up the campfire into a raging whirlwind of flame. The three of you dash quickly out of the area through the trees.
From what you could tell, the presence from earlier was still following you. It would go on like this until you all burst through the trees into the beginnings of the Hot Water Country. Steam from various geysers clouded up the skies above and made it a bit warmer than usual. But at least you could see your pursuers now.
"Aha! Looks like things are starting to heat up!"
"Knock it off...you should have figured out who we're dealing with by now."
You put up a guard as you observe the three people in front of you, all obviously from Kumogakure, as their headbands indicated. One with blonde hair and a loud mouth, the other also with blonde hair but a more reserved attitude (her breasts were also pretty big, you said to yourself), and the last one with white, shaggy hair, and and a mellow look on his face. Of course, being from the Cloud Village, they all carried swords, though varied in their style.
"Right...I think I know who this is. Konoha's 'White Devil', is it?" the supposed leader asks.
"In some areas, she's known as Snow White," the woman responds.
"That, too...that's interesting. So, we finally meet in battle. I don't have any cool nicknames like you do, but I'm not a pushover, either."
"I wouldn't expect any less of you, Mister Darui."
"Oh?" He looks surprised by that. "They've got a file on such a dull guy like me...guess nobody's safe, eh? Well...orders are orders. Sorry to do this to you, Snow White."
"I feel the same way," you reply. "But this mission means a lot to me. I won't fail."
"So it is. Let's rock!"
"Un, Yuki...what should we do in the meantime?" Aoi asks with concern. Good question...
---
a) Have the others stay and help out 1. One stays, the other continues on 2. Both stay with you
---
