"Wait. Deneb's going to be on a different assignment?"
"Yes"
"Chief, don't worry."
"Would it be too much to ask that he accompany me?"
"I'm afraid so Lieutenant", you didn't show it well, but you were actually fairly shocked. What sort of assignment would Deneb get that it's more important than the others. Honestly...Maybe it had something to do with his strength...that must be it.
"Heh", Deneb cheekily pats your shoulders, "Don't worry chief, you're a big girl now, you'll be fine!"
A little miffed you smack the back of his helmet.
"Ow. Jeez Chief."
"Alright, enough fooling around you two, you're dismissed lieutenant. You can get the mission files on your slate at the mission center. Come with me Deneb." He orders, giving you a salute and exiting the room.
This entire day was just....taking a turn for the weirdest. Deneb stopping at the doorway pulls something out from his shirt, pushing it into your hands. "Here chief, consider it a gift. Seeya in a bit", he coolly remarks, giving you a mock salute and walking out.
"Stay safe!" You call out
"You too chief!"
"Moron..."You quietly add, looking at the device he just gave you. Some sort of...plasma pistol? Or was it a carbine? The design wasn't exactly reminiscent of either, but it had a similar...feel. (think Dead Space plasma cutter for now)
Heading over to the mission center you download the saboteur mission files from the mainframe, taking a look on your slate.
[Briefing: The Federation forces have taken the north and west sectors of the city. Working with a special forces sabotage team, the operative will advise and assist in the construction of blockades to impede enemy movement. Rendezvous with the SF team at the Delaney Theatre for further details.
Special equipment pick up in lockers]
Huh, sparse on details apparently. Heading over to your locker you open it up to find some sort of body suit. It looked a little weird...kinda tight. Reluctantly you change out of your wet clothes into the new suit, the details automatically downloading to the slate. You only skim it over, the Mk. VII Personnel Suit, brand new military grade, something about biometrics, safety details, how the armor worked, shield generator in the shoulders, thrusters, twin cold fusion reactors and other energy details, self repair and micro-storage, physical enhancements, mental interface. It was literally...top of the line stuff...except the shield generators. They appeared to be an old model taken from old military combat armor, but that was fine. It would be fine for stopping minor fire for a good while.
It worked solely on thought... What was...microstorage? Immediately the skin of the suit peels back into the shoulders and back, which then seem to fold down into a form fitting thin layer of metal, leaving you completely nude and quite cold in the locker room. "Oh jeez!" You yelp, reflexively commanding the suit to redeploy. Maybe it was better to wear something underneath...After all, it did feel like you were wearing nothing at all, an odd and awkward feeling.
More appropriately dressed underneath, you check out the other features, activating the shields, testing the thrusters, and messing around with the mental interface. The shields formed around the skin of the suit itself, instead of creating a barrier, probably better in case of close quarters combat. The thrusters seemed incapable of flight, at least on this planet, but they did seem to aid in your movements, making it so much easier to move and jump about.
Inside the locker, there was one more thing. A pair of gloves, one slightly more like a gauntlet. You slip them on, muttering, "Must be part of the su-"
Immediately the suit's mental interface jumps into your mind, it felt like it was trying to hack your brain. "Augh!" You hold your throbbing head in pain, almost keeling over from the intense shock throughout your body.
"Imagine Engine Activated" the computer seems to proudly announce.
Imagine engine? What was...Information begins to flood your head on the operation of the gloves, or rather, the IE. The design of the interface was different from typical electronics, it was more like it melded with your mind than anything. Instantly you knew how to use an ability.
A) Playing with fire - Explosive bursts of fire from both hands (typical explosive fireball move, high speed, well rounded) B) Nova flare - A huge fireball fired from the hand. The surrounding air turns into a superheated plasma for an instant, capable of stopping incoming fire. (a good counter/clashing ability) C) Vapor Chamber - Through physical contact, the user can superheat the internals of any object. (Most effective against piloted armor and vehicles, good against bio and biomechanica, weak against straight up robots) D) Fire Tosser - Slow but effective flamethrower, best again bio and biomech, good against smaller robots, mediocre against piloted armor and vehicles. E) Arc Torch - Forms a violet flame at the hands that act as welders or torches that can slice easily into metal. (Good against anything mechanical) F) Tune Up - Allows the user to superheat (or otherwise overcharge) weapons for even more damage and incendiary effects. (Can be used with plasma, conventional bullets. Cannot be used with beams, conventional melee weapons - which get destroyed by the move). Has to be used with a weapon. Chance of destruction or degradation. G) Custom ability
If you're wondering why these are the choices, it was based on the missions. You'll get more trees later on.

Playing around you try to get the ability moving. Fiddling with your fingers you finally get a response, a small violet flame lighting up at the tip of your index finger. Working on it some more you start it up at each finger with the exception of the thumb. Before long the shapely flames become hotter, suddenly igniting into an intense blue light, shaped a bit like a small blade. With the heat encroaching on your hand you quickly will it away, pulling your hand away in a slight panic. Wide eyed and mystified by your new ability you shake your hand, trying to cool it down. However you were doing this...you'd only be able to do it for a moment.
Grabbing your gear you look around for somewhere to holster it, but the suit doesn't seem to have any sort of pockets or holsters. Tapping the suit with your magnum you find that it seems to attach itself to the suit, like a magnet. The two knives as well! "Wow..." But the ammo... You grab a small utility bag from your locker as well, tying it around your waist and dropping in the speed loader clips. The slate seemed to stick as well. Now...to focus on the mission... "Delaney Theatre?" Where was-
A holographic image displays itself midair showing a map of your current region and the theatre presumably. It seemed to be displaying itself from the collar of the suit... "Impressive..." This thing was full of surprises.
Ready to go you exit the police department and head out into the streets, greeting some fellow officers along the way. With the storm still raging outside, people were being directed away from the police department to the bridge, just southeast from there.
Now the theatre...that was up north on Derelict Street. Presumably closer into occupied territory...Probably being used as a military outpost.
With the rain feeling as gentle as rain can be thanks to the shields you make your way, passing by and with several military outfits. The armored suits seemed strange this time, almost moving like a single entity, too perfect in a way.
Knocking on the large double doors you don't get a response at first, locked too. You only pound harder and harder before simply prying the doors apart and walking in. "HEY!" Immediately you have several rifles pointed at you. "Who are you?" 5 people in black armor, outfitted with light combat vests and full coverage helmets with what appeared like rebreathing masks.
"Uh...Lieutenant Anna Bering, your alias on the planet. " You promptly answer, saluting the 5 man group. "From the police department!" Maybe if you used your real identity, you could have some authority here...
"Whooo, a girl?" Whoever it was, it sounded like a woman. "Finally!" She says, removing the visor and gasmask, "Another woman!" It was a soft faced girl, looked like she still had a bit of baby fat on her, young too....Acting a bit chummy, she comes around and throws her arm around your back. "So you're our little helper huh? Hehehe, I'm Brandy, nice to meetcha"
"Three, knock it off!" One commands, "Helmets off." A rough looking man with a scar running out from the side of his mouth, looked like someone tried to rip a knife out of his mouth. He had a short stocky build that was visible despite the extra armor. "Nice to meet you Lt. Bering", He comes up saluting you as well.
"Likewise sir", you reply, glad the leader was surprisingly friendly.
The rest begin greeting you. A young man with his hair visibly flattened by his hair, "I'm Tho-"
"No need for introductions", maybe he wasn't so friendly you think, as their leader cuts off the man. "You can call us by the numbers on our armor", he says in a rough growl, patting his shoulder pad, which was clearly labeled 01 in white. The woman next to you...Three obviously...Brandy otherwise. The rest had names too.
"Geez", Brandy quietly mutters next to you.
"Is there a reason for the lack of introductions?" You ask.
"Our kind don't last long." This mission... "But you don't have to worry about that, you won't be following us into the hotspots."
"Hotspots?"
"Demolition zones", 02 answers. "You're here to help us mark targets and navigate m'am." 02 was a thin faced man, maybe in his early thirties, he looked...sophisticated with his sharp eyes. His voice was calm and cool too.
"Since you're here, we're moving out ASAP. Helmet's on." He places his mask back on as do the rest, "Sorry, but we don't have any extra gear for you." Waving you to follow he walks to a table with a map laid out on electronic paper - low tech stuff in the military...or at least it was two years ago. "We'll let you pick out the first zone. Red is enemy territory, blue is ours, white is neutral as far as we know. White is going to be our area of operation."
16 zones and 4 on each side. The entire upper half was red, the bottom row blue, and the 2nd row white. B1-4. From what you could tell...B1 was largely an market district, many, many malls and shops. Most of the buildings were wide and low. B2, office district, all skyscrapers. No doubt they'd go down hard in the streets and make it hard to navigate in low air. Probably the easiest target. B3, this area was the maintenance zone of the city, nothing but flood and sewer control stuff. Ideally you could flood the entire area if you could get to the flood gate access port in the center of the region. B4, a construction zone at the moment, for the bay renovations. Maybe beach some boats that are in storage. All options.
"We have to hit them all?" You ask.
"No, just one if things go well. There will be several groups, three per zone."

"Let's hit B3, it's the flood control center. Aren't there more detailed maps?"
"Yes, there are." Tapping his helmet a few times, a dim blue light flashes on and off from some sort of camera device mounted on the side of the combat helmet. Then grabbing the piece of digital paper new images pop up, ones from ground level, from humans? It was pictures of the flood zone and it appeared there were several different zones. The flood canals were full of both water and maintenance ships, keeping afloat atop the turbulent waters, frozen in the still picture.
01 was talking, trying to discuss the plan. "From the scout's reports there are two predicted paths. The flood canals and the streets via the maintenance buildings. Presumably they'll use the maintenance ships to ferry troops and equipment by land, and also go by the streets."
"Excuse me, may I?" You ask. Putting his finger on the paper he pulls away the live pictures to display the blueprint map once more. "If we can block up the canals we can stop their water route, and if we destroy the maintenance buildings we can block off most parts of the street." You wonder..."What about the air though?"
"In an open zone like that?" 05 folds his arms presumptuously. His voice was low and quiet, yet the air rumbled when he spoke. It fit his tall and bulky body image.
"I believe our makeshift anti-air will be more than enough to deny airspace ", 02's voice was calm and pleasant, perhaps even the hint of an accent, yet underneath it all there was an unnerving chill. "You need not worry yourself over air Lieutenant Bering."
"Oh, thank you..." It didn't feel comfortable...right...to call them by numbers. "I'm sorry..." You eye 01's armor, looking for a rank insignia but fail to find one. "Um, 01. Would you mind if I was introduced...By name?"
Presumably staring at you, maybe glaring, he grunts, "Yes m'am. I'm John." No rank? He nods at the rest of his team, prompting them as well.
02, "Matthew m'am"
03, "Brandy, but you alr-" 04 quickly cuts her off.
"Thomas m'am!" His voice was cheerful and pleasant.
"05, you can call me Heinz", once again, softly spoken yet rumbling.
"Thank you", you say smiling, feeling more comfortable addressing them by names like normal people. "And thank you Matthew."
"Moving on," John grumbles. "You seem to have a plan in either case, what should we hit first?"
A good question. Two zones, three teams, and possibly a way to take it out all at once. Though that plan seemed extremely dangerous in retrospect. There was the chance of getting stranded or drowning if the entire zone flooded. It was probably a safe bet that the Feddies had the capability of denying air support to the Union as well.
A) Canals B) Streets C) Tell him about flooding the entire area
1) Ask for the support of the 3rd team 2) No support team

"Let's take care of the canals", you decide. The canals were arguably the more dangerous of the two paths, so it was a good idea to hit it if you would have the support of one of the other teams. And flooding the area would be dangerous for everyone, better to simply block off the canals and the streets the "hard way".
"Understood." 01, John taps the receiver on his helmet and shortly puts his fingers on the map, making a pinching gesture to make it zoom in, with the view changing into a live overhead view. "Good news, recon teams have completed their scan of the area. We'll be able to see the real time updates from their scanners. Also, the area has been evacuated."
Evacuated, huh. "That's great. That'll make this a little easier." You take another look at the live map and take note of the 6 branches of canals coming in from the north, enemy territory, into the central canal. There were also 3 canals branching off from the central canal into the south, where you were currently.
"The team reports that there were enemy forces moving up near the central canal, they'll be there soon," he states. So if you were to blockade the central canal...There was a chance of enemy engagement. But then blocking each of the 3 canals in the south would take a long time... Though you could always ask the other team to take care of a canal or two.
You quickly purvey the map, looking for the best options in blocking off the canals. The central canal was always full of boats and barges, if you could commandeer and crash them in the canal you could easily block it. The canals in the south wouldn't be so easy, you'd have to move down some equipment or boats to block them up. One of the canals did have cranes set up, it would be easy to block those ones. "However we do this...it seems our best option would be to wreck the ships and clog the canal ways." You state.
"But what if the enemy just clears the wreckage away?" Thomas spoke curiously, if you didn't know any better, you'd save he was a newbie.
"It'll take them days, weeks, to clear up that sort of mess", Brandy quickly replies, "Sounds fine to me if I do say so myself, heh". She sounded a bit frisky, though her first impression already told you she was exactly that kind of person.
"There is also...block off the canals." Another option...unfortunately not one that was particularly viable if the area was really evacuated. "Do any of you know how to handle canal maintenance equipment?" Without technicians, it seemed unlikely that blocking the canals like that would be possible. On top of that, blocking off the canals could lead to flooding, though probably mainly in the north - a good thing in serious consideration.
"If I may speak M'am," Matthew, 02, he spoke so lightly and mannerly. You give him a nod. "I believe I may be able to handle it... Regardless of...whatever equipment they use." That sounded good to you.
"Alright Lieutenant Bering, how exactly are we going accomplish this?"
Viewing the map once more, you search momentarily, before putting your finger down on a certain building. It was just west off of the central canal. "The command station, the only one controlling the central canal." You always remembered that one because every time there was some bogus bomb threat you and Deneb were assigned to that particular command station. "If we get there, Matt should be able to block off the canals."
"Hmm... Alright, so what's our first plan of action?"
A. Block off the central canal with ships and equipment B. Block off the three canals in the south 1. Ask the aiding team to take one or two 2. Go alone (just your team) C. Shut down the canal at the command building. D. Flood the entire area E. Free choice
If A or C 1) Tell the other team to go take care of it by themselves 2) Take care of it with just your team 3) Ask them to follow 4) Ask for long range support (snipers)

"Let's go for that command station."
"We'll probably run into some armored resistance in the streets. Brandy, bring the firepacks. Let's go people!" John holds up his rifle, barrel first and waves it at the entrance. The rest of the team grabs their gear, slinging packs onto their backs; with a tap of a button on the strap it straightens out with a sharp clack, fitting grooves in their armor perfectly. They do everything in near perfect unison, even when they re-place the gas masks onto their heads.
"Hey girl, you mind packing a bit of heat?" Brandy asks, tossing you a pack as well. "Extra explosives eh?" Her pack was different, like two large tubes. Firepacks? Rocket launchers maybe...Over the shoulder mounted rocket launchers.
"Don't make the civi carry such dangerous equipment", John quickly warns.
But in Brandy's defense you insist, "It's fine. I need to do something too." Putting the harness around your should you tap it to let it tighten up against your suit.
"Very well. Let's move." John leads the way, 02 following, then 03, then 05, and 04 - Thomas, last. You notice the odd pattern in their movement as you follow, as well as the Green Star on his pack. The Green Star was the typical symbol for battlefield medics, though it had seen less and less use as machines replaced human medics.
A bit curious you ask him as the lot of you run out into the rain, briskly traveling down the sidewalk. "To...I mean, Thomas."
"It's okay m'am, you can call me Tom."
"Oh good. So Tom, you're a medic?"
"Yep! Number 4 is always the medic."
"Really? So, you're numbered by role?"
"Yes M'am! I'm actually the newest addition to the team."
"Oh...So that's why you...Eh, nevermind."
"Okay..."
Moving in silence for the most part you finally come to a stop at the corner of a ruined street: cars over turned, the street wrecked, large debris from the buildings laying in the ground. John, Matt, and Heinz move out of order to get into position behind a car turned upside. Thomas puts his hands up to keep you from advancing while Brandy moves into a lone position further behind everyone else, crouching behind a piece of rubble.
Receiving a short distance communications request you allow it. "Everyone link up on the mental network." The voice echoes in your mind. "Team, link vision." You watch as Thomas taps his helmet, assuming that was the procedure. Unfortunately you couldn't share in on this.
"Why did we stop?" You ask.
"Enemy land drones should be ahead."
"Are we just going to bust through?!" Brandy shouts in excitement.
"We should scale the buildings, get a better scope of things." Matt suggests.
"I'll go in as a distraction, you can go around and flank." Heinz offers.
Speaking up Thomas suggests, "Maybe we can go through the alleys or something? Sneak behind them?"
A) Charge through the streets B) Go up the buildings for a better look C) Heinz distracts, flank the enemy from the sides of the buildings D) Try to sneak around them E) Free choice

"I agree" you quickly consent, something at which Brandy sighs aloud.
"Alright", John grumbles, waving you, Thomas, and Brandy over to regroup on the other side of the street corner. "There should be some alleyways around here, let's go."
"How do you know all that?" You ask. His answer is obvious, "Helmet displays a map."
"Oh."
Both following and leading the team through the alleyways you watch as several enemy units move past you in the main streets. Squads of soldiers, deployments of quadruped land drones - all equipped with some sort of heavy firepower. Any sort of frontal attack would have been disastrous for the ones leading it.
Finally coming to the end of the alleys, only open street you see no possible way of getting past the patrolling enemy units. The worst part was that the command station wouldn't be too far away.
"We're at the end of the line it seems." John remarks. "Lt. Any ideas?"
"Are there any paths to the canal?"
"...Yes, just a while back."
"Okay...Do you guys have cloaking units or something? You know? You're special operations right?"
"02, did you bring it?"
"Yes sir."
"02 is equipped with a cloaking device."
"And a sniper anyone?"
"That's me again m'am", Matt responds.
"We could blow some stuff up back there, see if we can draw some attention", Brandy suggests. Was it a thoughtful plan or was it simply a desire to cause some destruction. She did seem like the careless type, though you wouldn't say it aloud to someone like that...In any case...unnecessary destruction, though not the ideal option, was an option.
"So what are you thinking Ms. Bering", Thomas asks; you begin to speak but halt for a moment, noting his use of a personal address.
"I...Okay, we could try to use the canal routes to enter the command station directly. There's a purifying station that leads out to the canal passively. But with the storm...it might not be the best option." You stop to hold your chin and think. "Or...if Matt could get to the other side and distract them."
"Or we could cause a distraction by blowing some stuff up...", Brandy adds once more. You stifle a sigh at her suggestion and turn your head away to the street, pretending to eye the enemy but secretly rolling your eyes instead.
"So Lt., what do you think our best chance is?"
A) Try to go through the canals B) Get Matt to go over and pick off some guys/distract C) Destroy some buildings a ways back so you can catch the enemy attention D) Free choice

"Let's try the canals."
"With the storm?"
Thomas's lack of enthusiasm was only expected, "I know it doesn't seem like the best idea...but I think we should avoid the enemy as much as possible. Unless you think it would be better to risk engaging all of them." You say, waving your finger around at the troops moving down the street. Only silence, good.
You briskly lead them back through the alleyways, and with some help, find the a proper route to the canal.
Crouched down behind a stack of crates you find yourself gripping the railing off the edge, staring down into the rushing water of the enormous central canal. It was quite literally, a raging river. Luckily, there would be a walkway down there, waiting for you and the team, leading straight into the command station's purification center.
During storms and floods the water in the canals would be dumped straight out into the surrounding ocean, meaning the waterway into the purification center wouldn't be nearly as full of water as usual. Or at least...this was your assumption upon seeing it.
"Alright..." You eye each of the team carefully. "Let's go", you say, grabbing the top railing and leaping over the side, falling several meters onto the wet and slippery walkway, slipping and falling to your knees as you land, barely grabbing the handrails on the side.
You wave the others down, moving aside to accommodate their landing.
Moving forward through the waterway Thomas carefully takes your hand with the team leading with their extravagant night vision helmets. Unfortunately, you forgot to consider the complexities of the city's waterways. It would take some exploring to find your way up unfortunately.
Minewhile, you keep yourself a little busy, whispering a conversation with Thomas aloud. "So Thomas, Tom, Tommy, can I call you Tom?"
"Yes Miss Bering."
"Just call me..."
"Anna?"
"Yea, that. No wait, just Ann is fine."
"Oh, that's great!"
"So Thomas...Tom...You guys mentioned something about not lasting long before..."
"Occupational hazard, comes with the job y'know? Oh, I mean...the same for you right?"
"Yeee-yes...Just doesn't seem like I'm so..."
"Replaceable?"
You almost raise a hand to smack him from behind but pull back, furrowing your brows. "Not quite the word I was thinking of Tom. Anyway...Why'd you choose this job?"
"...That's a bit of a personal question Miss Bering."
"Ann, and I was just wondering." You drudge your feet through the water. "Sorry."
"No, no. Uhh..."
"Hey you two having fun back there?" Brandy teases aloud.
"Yes", You sharply answer.
"Ok," she responds in a condescending manner.
"Anyway...I'm not sure A-Ann... I guess I just wanted to do something positive with my life."
"A medic? For a demolition squad?"
"Well yeah. Isn't that enough?"
"No, no... It's just...As a soldier?"
"Ah...I see what you mean. Well, I think it's fine. Someone has to keep these kind of guys alive!"
"What's that supposed to mean?" Brandy inquires with just a tinge of attitude in her tone.
"Hah, it means you get into a lot of trouble 03."
"Pft, I am sticking my tongue out at you right now mister."
"You're not even looking this wa-"
"Cut the chatter, we're here", John announces, climbing a ladder and pushing the lid aside to get a view.
"Primitive stuff eh?" Brandy remarks, obviously suggesting at the "primitive" ladder, more advanced planets might have a rail lifts, gravity lifts, energy lifts so forth. Though that could apply to most things on the planet.
"Occupied up there."
"Got your flashes 01?" Matt asks.
"Affirmative 02. Flash and clear?" He peeks up again. "Wait...they're moving...Might be patrolling."
"Matthew, you think you can get while the patrols are moving away?" You ask.
"Sounds risky...But yes. In fact, all I need to do is stick a terminal on the back of the system and I can do it remotely."
"Or we could clear the floor with explosives", Brandy suggests.
"You mean...blow up the floor?"
"Yep."
"And the controls?" You were also so close to the actual canal...
"It could work..."
"Maybe", Matt interrupts. "If the system is passive then it could, and seeing as how this is a...this isn't the most advanced planet...I could see that being plausible. But that assumes that the canal system holds in the water, not out. Disabling it may also flood the entire area. M'am?"
He clearly meant you, and it would seem that the flooding alternative seemed to come up by chance.
A) Let them clear the room B) Let 02 do his stuff C) Blow up the floor (chance of flooding the area or drying up the canal) D) Free choice
